Each quarter children will be focusing on either History or Geography, in Key Stage One this is a two year rolling programme of content, and in Key Stage Two a four year rolling programme of content, this allows all children in a Key Stage to be learning about the same topic at the same time, whilst also ensuring full coverage of the requirements of the national curriculum. The skills taught within these topics are adapted for each year group to ensure progression is made as children move through the school. It is a highly flexible and adaptable curriculum where we use the National Curriculum objectives as a jumping-off point and give staff the freedom to bring in their own creativity, passions and interests to their planning and to respond to the children's questions and lines of enquiry as the topic progresses, art and design units will often (but not always) link in with the Geography and History content too.
The focus is upon developing their key skills in the different subjects to create quality and beautiful pieces of work and help children to honestly evaluate and improve what they're capable of.
By teaching the same topics across the school we encourage the children to share what they are learning with their friends and family who might be in other classes. It creates a unique situation where children from separate ends of the school can teach each other things because of the different angles or areas of a subject they've covered.
At the end of each topic, we have a learning fair where parents and carers can come in and see the work and learning that the children have been involved in.
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
