This week for maths we would like you to explore money;
Money song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFzAU3u06Ps
Money story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-d5n3ltpwg
*Look at coins – 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1. Look at the features of the different coins, talk about how one 2p is the same as 2 x 1ps etc.
*Have 10/ 20 1p coins. Explain that you’re going to drop some coins into a money box/ bowl.
How many coins did I put in the money box? How do you know? What did you do to help you to count the coins? Repeat with a different amount of coins.
Year 1s and reception children who’d like a challenge can count in 2s, 5s or 10s, use those coins instead.
*Identifying the given amounts by counting out the coins. If you don’t have a printer, just write out the amounts and the children can find the given amounts. The latter sheets would be year 1 based.
*Investigating making different amounts. E.g how many ways can you make 5p, 10p, 20p etc. Year 1 can you make 50p? £1. (please explain that £1 is the same as 100p)
*Play shops! Make labels for the items in the shop (choose your values dependent on your child) and buy 1 or more items. Can you add them together? How much money will you need? Do you have enough money? Do you need change? What if you had 20p/50p? Which items could you buy?
*Play Topmarks Toy Shop https://www.topmarks.co.uk/money/toy-shop-money
*Play Topmarks coin sort https://www.topmarks.co.uk/money/coins-game
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
