Art and Design Technology
Art
At Laddingford we use Kapow Primary’s revised Art and design scheme of work. This aims to inspire pupils and develop their confidence to experiment and invent their own works of art. We have chosen to use Kapow as the scheme is written by experts in their field and designed to give pupils every opportunity to develop their ability, nurture their talent and interests, express their ideas and thoughts about the world, as well as learning about art and artists across cultures and through history. Our scheme supports pupils to meet the National curriculum end of key stage attainment targets.
At Laddingford, Art lessons focus on five strands:
- Generating ideas
- Using sketchbooks
- Making skills, including formal elements (line, shape, tone, texture, pattern, colour)
- Knowledge of artists
- Evaluating and analysing
and taught units are based upon four key themes - drawing, painting and mixed-media, sculpture and 3D and craft and design.
Through each curriculum year group, children create a sketch book, this not only shows progression of skill but also builds a portfolio of their art work but also develops an artist spotlight throughout each unit. Teachers and children are encouraged to 'think outside the box' in art lessons - if a final piece is 'too large' to display in a sketchbook, an annotated photograph will be presented instead.
Design and Technology
At Laddingford, we use Kapow as a scheme to develop and support the teaching of Design and Technology. The Kapow scheme of work aims to inspire pupils to be innovative and creative thinkers who have an appreciation for the product design cycle through ideation, creation, and evaluation. We want pupils to develop the confidence to take risks, through drafting design concepts, modelling, and testing and to be reflective learners who evaluate their work and the work of others. Through the scheme of work, we aim to build an awareness of the impact of design and technology on our lives and encourage pupils to become resourceful, enterprising citizens who will have the skills to contribute to future design advancements. Kapow enables pupils to meet the end of key stage attainment targets in the National curriculum and the aims also align with those in the National curriculum. EYFS (Reception) units provide opportunities for pupils’ to work towards the Development matters statements and the Early Learning Goals.
The National Curriculum organises the Design and technology attainment targets under four subheadings: Design, Make, Evaluate, and Technical knowledge. Throughout their time at primary school, children at Laddingford will experience, learn and revisit the following themes:
- Cooking and nutrition
- Mechanisms/ Mechanical systems
- Structures
- Textiles
- Electrical systems (KS2 only)
- Digital world (KS2 only)
